When we launched York Volunteer Centre in December 2020 one of the first things we asked ourselves was what do the most successful volunteer centres have in common? We quickly came to conclusion that it was much more than just offering a matching service for volunteers and organisations, although of course that’s a fundamental part of what we do.
The best volunteer centres work with their local organisations to improve their practice in engaging and managing volunteers, helping those same organisations to develop the best volunteer roles for their organisations, their beneficiaries and the community. If a volunteer centre raises the profile of volunteering and shouts about its value and importance in a locality, if it lets people know that volunteering can take many forms and requires differing levels of time commitment then the matching process will flow from that and will be a success.
So although it is only early days here in York we know what we want to achieve and why it is so important to York. We also know that all this requires great teamwork and we’re currently looking for volunteers of our own to help us achieve our ambitions. The Volunteer Centre at York CVS is looking for two enthusiastic volunteers, who can help the Volunteer Centre Manager during the week with admin and office related tasks, particularly related to volunteering activities. Each volunteer will work on different days of the week, and spend a half/full day each week at the office, alongside the manager, helping with the varied tasks needed.
-Answering email enquiries from the public about volunteering opportunities
-Maintaining and updating ‘Volunteering’ pages on website
-Assisting volunteer organisations with publishing and advertising volunteer opportunities on the website
-Updating information in internal system and spreadsheets
-Answering phone calls about volunteer related matters
-Liaison with external organisations/charities to renew volunteer opportunities on website
-Assisting with administrative tasks related to meetings/events with local organisations/charities at York CVS premises (subject to COVID-19 safe protocols)
Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
-Good IT skills, including ability to use MS Office (Outlook, Excel and Word) and some website maintenance (WordPress)
-Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in writing
-Friendly, confident telephone manner with an ability to speak empathetically with a variety of people
Familiarity with other aspects of MS Office 365 beyond already mentioned is desirable, but not required. Knowledge about GDPR and data protection in relation to personal information and awareness of confidentiality is also desirable for this role.
Full training and induction will be provided. The office setup at York CVS will be according to current government guidelines for staff and volunteers in office locations during COVID-19. Strict guidelines and appropriate health and safety measures will be in place.

As an Office & Admin Support Volunteer, you will be part of a friendly and sociable team at York CVS. You will be fully supported in the role, which will provide an opportunity to acquire new personal and technical skills that can be applied to other volunteering and employment opportunities. By volunteering at York Volunteer Centre you will help to promote volunteering, enable others to find the best volunteer roles for them and to support local voluntary and community organisations across the City. It’s a great place to hear about all the great charitable and voluntary things going on in York.
When are volunteers needed: From April 2021 volunteers are needed for a minimum of 4-6hrs per day, 1day per week by mutual agreement.
