Volunteer Community Stories Co-ordinator

Role Description

Would you like to give people with visual and hearing impairments the opportunity to share their stories and experiences, in order to raise awareness of visual and hearing impairments, how these affect an individual’s life, and how they have been supported by the Wilberforce Trust? We would also like to capture our volunteer’s stories. We want to document these stories to give people with visual and hearing impairments a voice, raise the profile of the Trust, and raise awareness of the services people can access and how they can engage with us.

Stories can be captured over the phone, via email or face to face. You will be supported by staff to identify potential individuals to approach.

What special qualities do I need to be a volunteer?

Some spare time
Good literacy skills
Sensitivity towards participant’s psychological and emotional wellbeing
An open and friendly nature
Good communication skills
A sense of humour
A DBS check (which the Trust will apply for)

How much time would I need to give?

As much or as little as you can — it is your decision. Two hours a month or a day a week, all is equally valued, all that we ask is that you communicate with the member of staff you are working with about your availability and when you are unable to fulfil agreed activities as early as possible. Occasional contributions, for example helping at a fundraising event, are also welcomed.

What will I get out of it?

Volunteering for the Wilberforce Trust gives; a chance to meet new people; to develop new skills; gain experience and knowledge; to be respected and valued for your involvement; the satisfaction of helping others; and valuable use of your spare time. You will also gain insight into the third sector and a small local charity, and training and support from staff.

A range of training opportunities are available to all volunteers. Ongoing support and supervision will be provided. We also encourage volunteers to suggest fundraising and event ideas if you have specific interests and ideas which we can support, and to get involved with the planning and running of events if that is something you are interested in. We will also provide a reference
