Trustee required for the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine

IPEM has a vacancy for an Independent Trustee (i.e. not a member of IPEM or the medical physics or clinical engineering professions) on the Board of Trustees of the Institute, to complement the knowledge and skills of current Trustees, who are physicists, engineers and technologists working in healthcare. Ideally, to address skills gaps on the Board, applicants should have a background in either law, business or enterprise.

IPEM is a Registered Charity promoting the advancement of physics and engineering applied to medicine and biology, and advancing public education in the field. It is also a Company Limited by Guarantee (No. 3080332), and all Trustees are also Directors of the Company.

The position is unremunerated but expenses will be paid in line with the Institute’s expenses policy. The Board of Trustees normally meets four times a year, twice in York and twice in London.

The successful applicant will require:

 An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties and responsibilities of trusteeship, and of a Company Director (experience as a Trustee is not necessary)
 Commitment to developing IPEM and support for its objectives
 Strategic vision, good independent judgement and creative thinking
 Willingness to speak their mind but be a team player
 Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life.

The Institute has approximately 4,600 members who work to improve healthcare in hospitals, other healthcare organisations and related academic and commercial areas. It communicates specialist knowledge through scientific publishing activities and scientific meetings, funds small-scale research and innovation projects, and has a growing public outreach programme. IPEM awards professional registrations under licence from both the Science Council and the Engineering Council. IPEM also plays a significant role in international medical engineering and physics.
