70, Walmgate, York, YO1 9TL

Organisation's Cause:
Older Adults

Type of Voluntary Activity:
Trusteeship / Committees

Location of Voluntary Activity:
Across York

Role description:
To join a group of 6 Trustees all of whom have experience in different areas of activity. In particular we would like someone with interest in communication and the media, to link in with our staff and help to get our message out to the older population of York and surrounding areas.

Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
We are a vocal group, putting forward lots of thoughts and ideas. We have Board meetings to discuss these ideas and also communicate via group e-mails. Currently we communicate via Zoom but look forward to 'real' meetings soon. Our CEO is fairly new in post and Age UK York is currently undergoing some restructuring as well as being likely to move premises. A new Trustee needs to have a flexible approach.

Will there be a DBS check? Yes

Driving Licence required? No

Volunteer's own vehicle required? No

Suitable for:
Hearing impaired
Ongoing Volunteering
Vision impaired

What will the volunteer gain/benefit from:
Trustees talk about the chance to put something back, sometimes because of personal or family experiences. Older Trustees can feel that as a charity for older people we are very close to home for them. For some people there's the opportunity to do something different and also, especially for younger people, the chance to increase skill sets and broaden experience generally, Existing skills are welcome but we link into the national Age UK which offers other training opportunities. We don't often meet socially, perhaps we should, but our Trustee Board and sub-committee meetings are occasions to meet and support each other, exchange views and feel involved in a worthwhile charity that improves and enhances the lives of the older population.

When are volunteers needed: There is no closing date.

How to get involved:
Enquiries are always welcomed. You can have an informal phone chat with the Chair to find out more. Phone 01904 627995 and ask to be contacted by the Chair. You can also look at our website We will hold an informal interview with you, usually with the Chair and CEO at which we'll find out a bit more about you and you can find out more about us. We'll then invite you to observe a Trustee Board meeting so you'll be able to meet the whole Trustee Board and perhaps one or two members of staff. We'll expect you to keep this meeting confidential. You can then decide if you'd like to be proposed for election to the Board. We'll carry out a DBS check and proceed from there.
