Role description:
We are looking to recruit a voluntary charity trustee who will be crucial in ensuring we can realise our ambition to establish the Joseph Rowntree Theatre as a hub for a wide range of community activities and a focal point in the city.

The Joseph Rowntree Theatre Limited is an independent registered charity which owns and manages the day-to-day activities of the theatre supported by a team of over 150 volunteers covering all aspects associated with running a small theatre. The theatre is used by many local performing groups and dance schools as well as professional touring theatre productions.

We are about to embark on a multi-year plan to raise sufficient money to enable us to make significant improvements to our 1930s theatre building so as to ensure that we can continue to provide a fantastic theatre for the community of York for many years to come.

With a fundraising plan and case for support in place we are seeking to appoint an additional trustee who will focus on the capital appeal.

Supported by the chair of trustees, the role holder will be an exceptional person who will:
Lead on the capital and development fundraising campaign to raise funds to enable the development of the theatre.
Lead a team of fundraising volunteers supporting the delivery capital appeal.
Manage and oversee the work of a professional fundraising consultant, who we will commission as required, during different phases of the capital appeal.

Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
Ideally, the applicant will have previous experience of fundraising for major capital project appeals. This role will involve a high level of communication with prospective major donors, trusts and foundations, in addition to overseeing the delivery of the capital appeal fundraising strategy. Experience of working with donors, trusts and foundations would be a great advantage.

What will the volunteer gain/benefit from:
Being a member of the board of trustees is a voluntary role. You will benefit from involvement in one of the country’s top community-led theatres, working with remarkable people from across a wide range of backgrounds to deliver great entertainment to the people of York.

When are volunteers needed: The time commitment varies depending on the activities in the theatre. However, we anticipate approximately 4-6 hours per week during the busy periods of scheduling and liaising with the members of the capital appeal fundraising group to ensure a well-run appeal. In addition, you will attend 12 trustee meetings each year (approx. 2 hours per meeting, usually held on the first Monday of each month). We also ask all trustees to volunteer to act as duty managers for 2-4 shows per month (approx. 4 hours each time evenings and weekend afternoons.
