Role description:
Join a team of adult volunteers to plan and deliver opportunities for young people to develop skills for life through fun and adventure. We have openings to help in all our age groups (6-25), at over 20 locations across York. Scouts is needed now more than ever. The pandemic has hit our young people and volunteers hard – with two thirds saying this impacted on their mental health. Having people positive role models to guide the way, and give that extra bit of encouragement is so important in times like these. We help young people step up, speak up, and find their place in the world. We help them to build friendships, teamwork, resilience and other skills for life.

Skills and behaviours needed for the role:
Everyone is welcome to bring whatever skills they have, and we will provide training and support, to help them utilise these and to develop new skills. As a minimum all leaders are required to demonstrate they can work with adults and young people, following our safety, safeguarding, first aid and data management guidance. There are a varied of other areas that leaders are asked to develop including leadership, programme planning, practical skills, and promoting positive behaviour. Volunteers are expected to support our values of Integrity, Respect, Care, Belief and Co-operation.

Will there be a DBS check? Yes

Driving Licence required? No

Volunteer's own vehicle required? No

Suitable for:
Ongoing Volunteering

What will the volunteer gain/benefit from:
Each adult volunteer is assigned a Training Adviser to guide them on training and support available, and to put together a Personal Learning Plan to develop their talents. • You will share your skills and experience with young people, while developing yourself • You will have fun and meet new people in your area • You will inspire a generation (and they’ll never forget it)

When are volunteers needed: The good news is you shape what you do and decide how much time you give. Scouts happens when a lot of us each give a little. We always have opportunities to add to existing leadership teams, and have groups needing help every day. Most help is needed in evenings and at weekends, although volunteers can plan activities at any time, around their other commitments. We are still proving Scouting for our young people during the current COVID Pandemic, so we can get you involved as soon as you are ready.

How to get involved:
Drop a line to one of our District Team members via or DC.Minster@nys.org.uk, or DC.Ebor@nys.org.uk, or contact a Scout Group directly. We will assign someone to talk through the local options, and the vetting process. You may want to shadow some other leaders for a few weeks first. We will need you to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, and will guide you through the process to get you started.
