At the start of Volunteering Awareness Week on Monday 4 June, we celebrated together at the Priory Street Centre with our People Helping People partner organisations including City of York Council, active citizens and volunteers across the city. It was a packed agenda and a buzzing event, with over 70 attendees, making good use of our main hall.

The afternoon kicked off with Imi, Stephen Lee Hodgkins and Poppy facilitating some fab community art for the new Live Well York website. Andy Warhol himself would have been proud as the group worked together and each contributed their bit. Co-production in action!

Stephen and co also created some vibrant visual minutes in a giant colourful doodle, capturing highlights as they happened. For more images, check out:

This was followed by lunch, networking and an action packed afternoon of speakers and stories from across the sector and beyond.

This included stories about impact volunteering in York from Growing Green Spaces and Good Gym York.  Zena and Denise’s story was a highlight of the afternoon, as they shared their story as a mini interview by local area coordinator Sarah Charlton.

We also heard from volunteering at the University of York, Archbishop of York Youth Trust and gained academic insights on  Enabling Social Action from Dr Joanne Cook, University of Hull and Dr Jenny McNeill, University of Sheffield.

The focus of the second half of the event was tools and resources, as we were introduced to Live Well York, and Comoodle.
