Homeshare York is a new service that matches an older homeowner with a younger person in a homesharing arrangement for mutual benefit. Homesharers provide 10 hours of support and companionship a week to a Householder in exchange for a room in their home.

The service enables an older person to continue living independently with the support of a Homesharer, whilst also offering a viable option to young professionals or postgraduate students struggling to find affordable accommodation in the city. Homesharers can help with practical tasks, such as cleaning, shopping or gardening, as well as providing companionship and a reassuring overnight presence.

In addition to providing a resolution to these practical issues, Homeshare matches can also result in other significant benefits linked with intergenerational friendships. In similar schemes across the UK and internationally, participants have experienced reduced isolation, an increased sense of wellbeing and opportunities for shared learning.

Homeshare York is a not-for-profit scheme, with a monthly contribution made by the Householder and the Homesharer to cover the cost of the matching process and ongoing support. This fee is considerably less than the equivalent cost of alternative support or rental costs, making this a viable option for both younger and older citizens.
