Next month York charity Move the Masses are launching a city wide ‘Walking Buddy’ scheme called Move Mates with the aim of giving all people the opportunity, and the confidence, to get out of their front door and get moving.

Move Mates are trained volunteers who will meet a person at their home and accompany them to wherever they want to go.

Perhaps it’s a walk to the local shop or to pick up a prescription? Maybe it is to accompany them to an activity they have wanted to attend? It could be that they just fancy a walk around the block and having a chat.

Move Mates help anybody, of any age or ability.  Specifically people who might be facing mobility worries, fear of falling, social anxiety or loneliness.

Funded by the Ways to Wellbeing team at York CVS, they recognised that many people were isolated and ‘stuck’ in their home for fear of going out. Move Mates will change that.

Egg Cameron, Founder of Move the Masses stated “I visit an older person on a weekly basis (through the GoodGym Coach scheme) providing a regular friendly face and combatting loneliness, but I realised that many older and disabled people don’t get the opportunity to actually get out. Move the Masses is all about getting everybody moving, whatever their age or ability, so Move Mates was the obvious answer. We hope to pair up many people so that York is a city where nobody feels stuck at home and everybody can benefit from both fresh air and gentle exercise, as well as being able to get out to where they want to go.”

Volunteer Move Mates needed!

Move Mates are currently looking for volunteers all over the city AND people who would like to use the walking buddy service. There is no minimum commitment for volunteers, you just tell us when you’re available and we’ll allocate you where you’re needed. Let’s give everyone the opportunity to get moving! Get in touch with hello@movethemasses.org.uk to get involved.
