About Wilberforce Trust
The Wilberforce Trust is your local charity supporting people with sight and hearing impairment, including those with other disabilities. We have a wide range of services, from housing, support assessments and support with daily living to rehabilitation services, technology and equipment assistance and activity and educational groups. These services create opportunities that enable individuals to live fulfilled lives as independently in their community as possible.
As part of the Trust’s services aimed specifically at visually impaired children we will be supporting cookery and baking classes to teach children how to do so independently. The sessions will be for 8 – 10 children, and led by a qualified supervisor. Your role will be to support the children to complete tasks throughout the session.
What special qualities do I need to be a volunteer?
An interest in baking and cookery
An interest in supporting visually impaired children
Some spare time
An open and friendly nature
Good communication skills
A sense of humour
How much time will I need to give?
We would like to build up a team of volunteers who can attend these sessions on a regular basis, meaning you wouldn’t be expected to attend every single one, but support the sessions as part of a team. The sessions will be held at Millthorpe Secondary School (Nunthorpe Avenue York, YO23 1WF) every other Thursday during term time (the first three sessions that will run will be on 13th June, 27th June and 11th July and then will break for the summer) between 4pm and 6pm.
What will I get out of it?
Volunteering for the Wilberforce Trust gives; a chance to meet new people; to develop new skills; gain experience and knowledge; to be respected and valued for your involvement; the satisfaction of helping others; and valuable use of your spare time. You will also gain insight into the third sector and a small local charity, the opportunity to develop your skills and receive training and support from staff.
You will be given the opportunity to receive either face to face or online Safeguarding training, depending on your preference, a Welcome to The Wilberforce Trust induction session, Sensory Awareness Training, and ongoing support and supervision. We also encourage volunteers to suggest fundraising and event ideas if you have specific interests and ideas which we can support, and to get involved with the planning and running of events if that is something you are interested in. We will also provide references.
