Age UK York are looking for a new Support Worker. The post is 6 hours a week with the potential for extra hours when holiday and sickness cover is needed.
Age UK York has been providing carer respite services through 'In Safe Hands' since 1981. The support workers take the place of the regular informal carer for anything from 1-5 hours per week.
The cared for person may have dementia or confusion.
Responsibilities and Duties
Accompany an older person on outings away from their home e.g. snooker club or cinema.
Provide live-in-care for a few days or sit with the cared for person where there are complex needs, to give their carers a break.
If necessary and applicable, give personal care such as help with mobility, toileting, preparing food and help with eating, dressing, undressing and washing, training will be provided.
Report to the Service Organiser responsible for the client's care any issues which may have arisen with regard to health and safety and possible risk.
Attend appropriate paid mandatory training sessions.
Attend support worker sessions during the year.
Send in accurate written time sheets at the end of each month.
To take such decisions as are necessary for the safety and welfare of the client.
To monitor the ongoing condition of the client.
Understanding and sensitivity to the needs of older people.
Ability to work on own initiative without supervision.
Ability to handle challenging or inappropriate behaviour.
Adaptability to rapidly changing situations and behaviour patterns.
Experience of older people with confusion or dementia.
Honesty, reliability and confidentiality.
Knowledge of safe Moving and Handling, basic First Aid and Health and Safety and Risk Assessment procedures.
A liking for social activities.
