The Island is a registered charity in York providing “islands of space and time” for vulnerable children and young people (between the ages of 8 to 18); building confidence, self-esteem, resilience and unlocking potential through positive mentoring relationships and unique programmes.
The Island was established in 2007 providing services only to the City of York. We are now at the exciting stage of replicating our services regionally and potentially nationally.
We want to ensure that people are able to fully engage with our mission. We are looking for innovative thinking dynamic individuals who will challenge, help shape the future and support the delivery of the charity’s services.
To that end, we are looking to appoint a trustee with experience in finance to oversee our budgets, providing advice, scrutiny and support to the charity.
Salary: Voluntary | Job type: Part time | Hours: Time Commitment • The Board of Trustees’ meet at least 4 times a year, and in January for an Annual Away day in January. • All members of the Board of Trustees’ attend additional sub groups, in this regard it would be the Finance sub group.
Essential • Qualified accountant with demonstrated commercial awareness and knowledge. • Competent use of IT skills. • Proven ability to communicate and explain financial information to members of the Board and other stakeholders. • Analytical and evaluation skills, demonstrating good judgement. • Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship. • Good communication and leadership skills. Desirable • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of charity fundraising and finance practices. • Dedicated to the organisation’s cause and objectives and willing to act as the charity’s ambassador to external bodies, charities and companies. • Skills and experience in one or more areas of non-executive governance and management (e.g. strategic planning, business management, financial/accountancy, experience of Trusts or other grant giving bodies particularly fundraising and legal knowledge). • A team-oriented approach to problem solving and to management.
