York has a flourishing and diverse voluntary and community sector. There are currently 22 international, 108 national and 627 local charities based in York, with a combined income of £237m; 4,164 trustees of registered charities live in the city (Where else can I go? York, The Guardian, March 26th 2008).

There are also a significant number of sports clubs, faith groups and smaller, grassroots community, tenants and residents associations that are not registered charities - so there are believed to be at least 1,000 voluntary and community organisations in the city in total.

York CVS is working with other local infrastructure organisations across York and North Yorkshire to maintain a shared, searchable database of voluntary and community organisations in the sub-region. Many of these organisations have chosen to make their information publicly available on the VCS Directory website.

Many community groups, activity groups and clubs are also listed on the Yortime website.

We've done two presentations on the third sector in York which you can find on here.
