Sleep rough to raise awareness of homelessness

Printer-friendly versionSend to friend

York charity Safe and Sound Homes

seeks volunteers to spend a night sleeping rough outside the Minster.

The event takes place on Tuesday 13 March and aims to highlight the issue of youth homelessness in the area.

Peter Robinson, SASH Director says: "It is clear that homelessness is rising across the country and York will be no exception to this.

"We need to be able to respond to the expected increase in demand for our services, which means raising awareness of the issues locally, as well as securing financial support which, for SASH as for all charities, is becoming harder.

"The SASH Sleepout aims to raise awareness of youth homelessness in York. A group of staff, trustees, volunteers and supporters will be spending the night sleeping rough outside York Minster.

"We are doing this to highlight the threat of homelessness faced by a growing number of young people in York. We want to let as many people as possible know about the valuable service that SASH provides to homeless young people through Nightstop, our emergency accommodation project which provides a safe place to stay overnight in the homes of our volunteer hosts."

You can support SASH in a number of ways:
  • join them on the Sleepout. (Please note places are limited so if you are interested in taking part please contact the charity as soon as possible.);
  • help spread the word about the event by requesting a poster/flyer from SASH;
  • sponsor someone who is taking part through on online fundraising page at Virgin Money Giving
  • text a donation via the free JustTextGiving service. Just send a text to 70070 with the message SASH16 followed by the amount you would like to donate. For example, if you would like to donate £10, just text SASH16 £10 to 70070.
